LIV Golf South Africa, held 19–22 March 2026 at The Club at Steyn City in Johannesburg, was the first LIV Golf event ever staged on African soil. It smashed the previous local attendance record of 76,383, set at the 2019 Nedbank Golf Challenge. Tickets for the 2027 edition (22–25 April, same venue) went on sale immediately after Sunday's final round, with early-bird allocations already selling out.

This is not a golf story. It's a sports tourism economics story.

Not your traditional golf tournament

LIV Golf is a Saudi-backed league that pairs individual competition with a team format — four players per franchise — layered with live music, festival-style food, and entertainment. GoldFish, St. Lucia, and Calvin Harris performed over the four days. It's golf packaged as a lifestyle event, and that packaging matters.

Of the 100,000-plus spectators, 40% were attending a golf event for the first time. That's the most important number in this story. It means LIV Golf didn't just serve existing golf fans — it expanded the market.

The emotional anchor was the Southern Guards, the all-South African team of Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Dean Burmester, and Branden Grace, who finished just one stroke behind the winners. Fans spontaneously sang the national anthem at the 18th green during the final round. Bryson DeChambeau, who had never visited SA before, won both the individual and team titles, earning R119 million. Branden Grace led South African earnings at R43 million.

The LIV Golf SA economics

SA Tourism confirmed the event generated an economic impact exceeding R800 million. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie projected closer to R1 billion. Industry data from SA Tourism shows golf tourists spend approximately 120% more per day than the average visitor, and tourism operators had exhibitors on-site selling safari, wine route, and coastal packages designed to extend visitor stays well beyond the tournament.

The broadcast reached more than 900 million households across 200-plus countries. Globally, LIV Golf says its 14-event annual schedule has generated over $1 billion in cumulative economic impact across host cities.

McKenzie drove the government bid after attending a LIV Golf event in South Korea in 2025. A multi-year deal with Steyn City is in discussion, and McKenzie has targeted 250,000 spectators for 2027 — though Steyn City CEO Steven Louw publicly noted they'd need additional infrastructure, including more bridges, to get there.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil called South Africa a cornerstone of the league's global schedule. Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille called it the country's "new gold rush" for sports tourism.

The other side of the scorecard

The event was not without controversy. McKenzie has faced sustained criticism for redirecting funding away from major arts festivals — including the KKNK, National Arts Festival, Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Innibos, and Aardklop — to back LIV Golf. The South African Roadies Association called it an abuse of public funds. Fan violence incidents were reported and shared on social media during the event. And MK Party MP Gift Motaung questioned whether resources are being adequately directed toward grassroots sport development rather than international spectacles.

LIV Golf is funded by the Saudi Public Investment Fund. That context is relevant regardless of the economic numbers.

What LIV Golf SA tells us

LIV Golf South Africa is part of a broader government push. The country is also in talks to host Formula 1. The strategy is to position SA as a global sports events destination — using sport as an economic and diplomatic tool.

The 40% first-timer statistic is the proof point that the addressable market is larger than most estimates suggest. Golf in South Africa has historically been perceived as an elite sport. LIV's festival format broke through that barrier in four days.

The demand exists. What happens next depends on infrastructure, consistency, and whether the economic benefit spreads beyond a single venue in Midrand.
