Our last and biggest event for 2026 asks:
- How do you build a R1bn business?
- Then, how do you sell that R1bn business?
And we bring two people who've already done it in SA: Andrew Hardie on building all the way to a R1bn exit, and top VC Johan Bosini on how great exits are made.
You can’t learn that anywhere else…

How Refreshi grew from 5 stores to 700 without raising a cent
When we first featured Refreshi in May '25, they were in 5 Stellenbosch stores – now, they're in 700+ stores and have paid their partners about R16m to date…
Just 17 months ago, Jakob Holbak was pitching a way for stores to sell their end-of-day surplus food as discounted surprise bags. Now, Refreshi is in 700+ stores across Cape Town, Joburg, Pretoria, Durban, Gqeberha, George and Mossel Bay, including:
SPAR
Bootlegger
Vida e Caffè
Krispy Kreme
King Pie
Newmark Hotels
There's even a Somerset butcher selling game meat bags on Mondays, plus Fairview cheese and wine farms clearing extra stock.
How it works: You pay in the app during the day, select a category (bakery or fruit and veg) and collect a "surprise" bag of goodies at closing (not a gimmick, stores literally can't predict what'll be left on the shelf). The verdict so far from 200k registered users is that it's always good stuff.
It's free for stores to join, and Refreshi takes a small cut per bag sold. They've done just over 170k bags so far this year, and the team is 7 people, still working out of DinePlan's offices, and the founders have never raised outside money.
Refreshi in a user's own words…
4 mega plays Refreshi pulled off along the way
1. They rescued 250k meals: Refreshi's first impact report counted 250,000 meals rescued, R12.5m saved by shoppers and more than R16m recovered by partner stores, from more than 200,000 registered users.
2. They signed FoodForward SA: In June, it became their sustainability partner, meaning a slice of the revenue on each bag can be donated to SA's food bank.
3. They went national with a team of seven: Four people run things from Cape Town, with a rep each in Joburg and KZN, and one covering the Western Cape, Garden Route and PE.
4. They paid partners R16m: Partner payouts sit at about R16m to date, from just over 170,000 bags sold.
The 4 big lessons Jakob took from building
1. How you tell the story matters: Students told Refreshi nobody wants to buy "waste," so they sharpened the consumer-facing language to affordable meals from surplus food. Same bag, same food, very different perception to the public.
2. In SA, trust is built face to face: Cold emails and calls to busy store owners who'd never heard of Refreshi didn't work. Walking in and talking to them did.
3. Let big names and customers do the talking: Getting Bootlegger and Krispy Kreme on board brought scale and awareness. Then customers started posting their unboxings on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok without being asked.
4. Copy what works, and pick partners who fill your gaps: Find a big problem another country has already solved (the team were inspired by Danish app Too Good To Go), and don't wait for the perfect time to launch. Just team up with honest people who bring the skills you lack. If you're the sales person, find the tech and finance people.
What's next for Refreshi
Another major retailer and coffee group is piloting the app now and a big hotel group pilot is lined up. Refreshi is also releasing a case study with the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa soon.
So we're watching this space…

Start rebuilding your company focus (and growth) in 3 minutes
You've seen the drift: as companies grow, they tend to lose sight of their core customer as they expand into adjacent markets and add new products. The question is: how do you get your focus back after years of growth?
The fix is deceptively simple: forget about complex "target market" thinking and re-focus your company on serving the one person who can't afford to not buy your product right now.
Get sharper in 3 minutes:
Take 2 minutes to walk through a few quick questions about your business
Take 1 minute to book a chat with DoubleShift's Founder and MD, Kurt Schröder
Kurt and his team will set up a focused 30-minute brand review, and you'll walk away with actionable recommendations, where to re-anchor, and what to stop saying yes to.
RAISING IN SA
If a customer left tomorrow, what would they actually lose?
Not features, because someone can rebuild those. The real question is what breaks in their week: the data your product has learned from, the approvals and handovers built around it, the records that would have to be migrated, the compliance sign-off a replacement would need to clear again…
As it turns out, there are 5 things to add up before you know whether you have a moat or just a head start. Head starts are now measured in weeks.

🛍️ Happy Ads Pays Per Sale. Happy Pay confirms its 20x return on ad spend is a 5% average commission, from 50 pilot merchants. Retailers only pay when a sale lands. Test it yourself, and keep the attribution window short.
🤖 ChatGPT Ads Land Here. OpenAI has started showing ads to SA users on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. Catch: local businesses can't buy them yet, so it's foreign brands only for now. Using free accounts for work? Check your ad settings.
🪙 Crypto Rules, Take Two. Treasury and the SARB will rewrite their draft cross-border crypto rules after thousands of public comments, moving away from pre-approvals. No timeline yet. The lesson: comment periods really do change policy, so use them.

LEADERSHIP LESSONS
What AI can't see about your best engineer
One engineer gets a 50% raise because an AI note-taker logged a spike in their output. Another writes zero lines of code that quarter, but saves the company R800'000 somewhere else. Only one shows up as a win in the data.
That's why OfferZen asked John Hartley, Head of Engineering for Conversational AI at Trellis, why he keeps AI out of people decisions entirely. His answer: AI helps with the objective 80%, like resume screening and interview transcripts, but it can only reward what it can see. Here's why people decisions should stay off-limits to AI.
