Feeling World Cup vibes {{ FIRSTNAME | there }}? Apparently, the next frontier in great football is using AI to spot talented players at the grassroots level. And, failing that, clubs can just bet against themselves to offset their potential losses. 🤭

The Braai That Inspired a R14M (So Far) Medical Venture
South Africa has a doctor shortage and a doctor surplus on the same day. The fix isn't more state posts — it's the private operating theatre next door. Meet the platform that's paid out R14 million, getting idle doctors into paying surgical slots…
SA trains some of the best doctors in the world, who then get snapped up by high-income countries. Despite around 1'100 vacant medical posts, more than 1'260 doctors who've already completed their community service are unemployed. Our public sector serves 84% of patients at an abysmal 0.3 doctors per 1'000 citizens — well below the WHO's guideline of 2.5.
The strange part: The work exists, it's just happening in private theatres where surgeons operate every day and could use a helping hand.

The local platform getting idle doctors into paying theatres
The Surgical Assistant matches surgeons who need a theatre assistant with qualified doctors who need the work — and makes sure those doctors actually get paid. Doctors are vetted against the requirements of SA's major hospital groups and verified against HPCSA records. One call gives a surgeon access to a vetted assistant, day or night.
How it started: Co-founder Le Roux Viljoen was an unemployed doctor working unpaid shifts to get experience. It was a Saturday, the braai was going, and the Bokke were playing. Beer in hand, a call came in: A granny had fallen and broken her hip, did he want to scrub in?
For obvious reasons, he couldn't. So he sent an unemployed mate instead. The surgeon was thrilled at the match (the Dr, not the Bokke game). And so The Surgical Assistant was born.
Three years in: R14 million paid out across more than 7'000 cases, with roughly 1'200 unemployed doctors registered on the platform.
SA's best export is its doctors. The Surgical Assistant is building a reason for them to stay.

WHATSAPP’S HOT
They Built What on WhatsApp?!?
Who still manages their domestic worker's payslip on a napkin?
SA has over 1.6 million domestic workers: Most employed informally, without contracts, UIF registration or leave tracking. AskMandla is a WhatsApp-based employment platform that helps households formalise all of it from their phone.
But here's what's really clever:
✅ Contracts, payroll, UIF registration and leave tracking
✅ Targeting SA's R74bn+ domestic wage economy
✅ Workers get payslips, unlocking access to financial tools
It helps turn compliance into financial inclusion.

The most expensive AI mistake isn't doing nothing…
Every business owner has heard the same line this year: Adopt AI or fall behind. So they do something. They buy the tool that a competitor mentioned. They run a pilot. They let a keen junior loose on ChatGPT.
Six months on, the subscription's still debiting, and nothing has actually changed.
The problem was never enthusiasm: SA managers are among the most AI-bullish in the world. The problem is the sequence. Most firms pick a solution before they've diagnosed the problem, and AI pointed at the wrong bottleneck is just expensive theatre.
The firms seeing real returns did the unglamorous thing first: They worked out exactly where an hour of human time was leaking (the copy-paste, the chasing, the re-typing) and aimed AI only at that. The result is a return or a recurring line item.
IN SHORT
Hot off the press in business and tech…
🇿🇦 CPT Steals the Crown. SA's startup ecosystem holds 52nd globally and #1 in Africa, but Cape Town just jumped 24 places to 114th, retaking the national lead from Joburg on 39% growth. StartupBlink's 2026 index also shows SA with 31.3% annual ecosystem growth — the highest in Southern Africa.
💰 Trillion-Dollar Trio. OpenAI has confidentially filed for a US IPO, targeting up to $1 trillion in valuation. It joins SpaceX and Anthropic in a trio of trillion-dollar debuts testing whether investor appetite for AI has a ceiling. Spoiler: probably not.
🚗 Ford's Fake Director. Ford SA is filing criminal charges after discovering someone fraudulently registered themselves as a non-executive director on the CIPC. The person has zero connection to the company. CIPC security, anyone?
🚆 Gautrain Levels Up. 16 years, 216 million passenger trips and now new upgrades are coming: smart licensing centres at stations, commercialised retail spaces and (get this) daycare centres for commuting mums. About time.

How to write a cold email that actually gets replies
Most SA founder cold outreach gets ignored because the email reads like a template blasted to a thousand people. So we got an SA GTM engineer who's built 85+ AI sales systems (and driven a 300% lift in qualified enquiries in 90 days) to show us the structure he uses to write cold emails that actually land.
And it turns out, there are 4 specific steps to write a cold email that gets a reply without sending another 500.
☝ Send this to a founder who's still using "Hope this finds you well."
