Time to play {{ FIRSTNAME | there }}? On Monday, Elvorne slipped up when talking about SA's now-infamous rugby stadium flyover in Cape Town. So to make up for it, Renier said we should invite you to come fly over stadiums and dodge hadedas in Flappy Link with us. โ๏ธ

Gumtree was a South African company, and then it wasn't for 18 years. Until a Durban company went and bought it back. Yes, weโre bringing Pedro Casimiro from the new Gumtree SA on stage to tell us why โ what do they see that we donโt?
Plus: a host of KZN founders share what itโs like building in KZN and not anywhere else. 1 Oct, Ballito, R150.

Helping SA traders launch with a bang
Nearly one in every R10 spent on retail is now online, but reaching shoppers at scale is a dance for smaller traders, so this bootstrapped SA outfit launches you on all the big ones in one goโฆ
If you were a trader, manufacturer or distributor just starting in the US, the game is easy: Get yourself on Uncle Jeff's Amazon and you have instant access to over a third of every dollar Americans spend online. That's the power of traction and economies of scale in a country with 340+ million people.
It's not the same in SA, though: The closest comparable we have is Takealot (about a third of SA online), but the economics don't work the same in a country of just 60 million. So you've gotta go wider and get on Takealot, Amazon SA, Makro, Leroy Merlin, Loot, Bob Shop, etc. just to get visible.
The problem is the admin: every marketplace/platform runs by its own rulebook. One wants product attributes like colour done this way, another wants it that way, and a third, who's to know?

And don't dare get it wrong on even one big channelโฆ
Built by accident
Giovanni Joubert knows all about this. He'd been contracting as a developer out of varsity, setting one kitchen retailer up to push her in-store stock onto Takealot. Then those orders had to hit her accounting, then Makro too. Building it a third time, he realised he was building a product here.
So he decided to make it officialโฆ
The platform turning six marketplaces into one dashboard
Wherehouse is an SA platform that plugs a brand's stock, orders and accounting into every major local marketplace at once. Its whole job is to make all those channels behave like one single one.
It pulls product data from wherever your products live: your store, your ERP, even a spreadsheet, and pushes it out in the shape each marketplace demands.
Then, an automated repricer chases the buy box, lifting your price when no one competes and dropping it when someone undercuts you. Nice. And a stock recon tool picks up marketplace inventory losses and invoices them to recoup those costs.
Wherehouse at a glance
A platform that pushes all store items to all SA marketplaces simultaneously
Bootstrapped and angel-backed for now
Run by a team of 10 off an internal AI they call Jarvis
Already used by brands like Edgars, Fieldbar and Kitchenique
Claims to sync more than R1.7 billion in marketplace revenue a year.
So, even if SA e-commerce remains fragmented, now even a newbie trader can come in and get the benefit of the full spread, without the admin headache. And it's apparently worth it: Giovanni says his sellers see a 30% uplift when going multi-channel.

3 Things in AI this week
Turns out SaaS isn't dead. Salesforce reinvented the SaaS model by asking you to skip its UI entirely and point your Claude at its data instead. Jip Claudeforce is a thing. SaaS founders, take note: Reviving the model may be as simple as setting up an MCP. See it here.
A New Way to Agent. The new OpenClaw 2.0 ships Swarm mode, where one task spawns parallel subagents and collects their results, and Fleet, which runs isolated "cells", each with their own gateway and credentials. Itโs like a team of temps versus setting up various departments. Try it here.
What actually makes an AI agent an agent? Praelexis argues it's not tools, loops or intelligence; it's authority. What the system is permitted to decide, and permitted to do. The real unlocks come from knowing how to use it wisely. Read it here.

IN SHORT
Cause dropping a headline or two at the braai never hurt anyoneโฆ
๐ก๏ธ A Moat Made of Complaints. Capitec says it stopped R699 million in fraud over 12 months by scoring beneficiaries in real time using reports from other clients. By aggregating what 26 million clients already knew, it helped stop 64'000 mule accounts.
๐ฆ From $300m to $3.2bn in Five Months. AfterQuery is reportedly YC's fastest-ever unicorn, and the founders are 22 and 23. It pays doctors, lawyers and specialists to demonstrate how they actually do their jobs, then sells that reasoning to AI labs. Hmmโฆ
๐ Add Payments, Inherit the Threat. Many X users got flooded with password reset emails days after X Money launched, in what might be an attack mass-triggering a public form (although thereโs been no breach found yet).
๐ฑ Products That Convert. You've probably tapped, swiped and touched their work without knowing it. For 16 years, Isoflow has been designing the UX and UI behind some of the world's biggest digital products, strategy, research and data turned into real business impact.*

WORK SMARTER
Can you get funding without giving half your company away?
Hardware businesses are different: capital-intensive yet well supported by government and institutions. So we asked an SA founder who built a fleet electrification business to around R50m raised, largely off money that takes none of his company.
And it turns out, there are 5 specific steps to fund a hardware business without handing over equity you didn't need to.

A graph that matters
Where and how you choose to study makes a huge difference to the price in SA.
๐ก UCT averages R89'163, UKZN sits lowest at R59'283 โ a R29'880 spread across the same seven institutions.
๐ก Course choice swings it further: BCom ranges from R62'000 to R110'580 depending on where you go, while MBChB runs about R113'000.
๐ก The most interesting part is not on the graph: UNISA is R15'000 to R26'000 a year, doing double the intake as UCT for a 5th of the price.
The massive cost gap between the cheapest contact university and UNISA isn't about quality of teaching; it's about delivery model. That's the same lever every online business is actually pulling โ focus on perfecting it.
