The City of Johannesburg launched an electric bus trial at the Metrobus Milpark Depot in Braamfontein on Thursday. Buses from several manufacturers will run for 30 to 60 days across September and October on Metrobus routes and the Rea Vaya BRT Phase 1C(a) corridor, alongside the existing fleet rather than in isolation.
The programme is led by transport MMC Kenny Kunene in partnership with C40 Cities and the International Council on Clean Transportation.

The measurement plan is the substance. The city will assess battery performance, energy consumption, mean time between failures, fleet availability, life-cycle costing, and the battery maintenance and energy storage requirements a depot would need. It is also testing an Intelligent Transport System providing telematics, real-time passenger information, driver monitoring and AI-based safety systems.
Every trial bus is being integrated into Metrobus's existing Fleet Management System, control centre and automatic vehicle location system, so the comparison runs on the city's own instrumentation rather than a supplier's. Results will be verified by the City's Performance Management Unit against approved Technical Information Definitions.
Routes cover Soweto, Sandton, the CBD and Roodepoort, with Rea Vaya 1C(a) taking buses through Berea, Yeoville, Orange Grove, Norwood, Alexandra and Marlboro. If the trial succeeds, the buses stay in commuter service.

MyBroadband reported the trial and quoted transport department executive director Lutando Maboza on ensuring every rand invested in public transport delivers value for commuters. The Citizen carried Kunene's line that Johannesburg cannot continue to buy buses the old way. Infrastructure News confirmed the trial involves several original equipment manufacturers operating in South Africa, none of which have been named.
Test before you tender
The interesting part is the method, not the vehicles. A metro is running competing manufacturers' buses on its own routes, on its own telematics, with results verified by its own unit, before committing to a fleet purchase. That inverts the usual sequence, where a specification gets written, a tender goes out, and the performance question gets answered after delivery.
Compare it with the SAPS body camera tender, still unadvertised years after the requirement was identified. Two openings sit in this for suppliers. The energy storage and depot charging requirement is a separate procurement from the buses themselves, and the Intelligent Transport System layer is software, not vehicles.
If the trial produces the data the city says it will, both get specified off evidence rather than a brochure.
