Securing SA futures at a 91% discount
Most first-year dropouts don't fail at university; they set themselves up for failure with mismatched career choices in Grade 12, closing off potential pathways โ this startup's here to fix thatโฆ
Mismatched career guidance is one of the main reasons 50-60% of South African university first-years walk away before finishing. There is a fix, of course; it just comes with a hefty price tag.
A single sit-down with a career specialist runs about R2'500. SA founder Mornรฉ du Toit knows, cos that's what he paid for his own son's guidance. And it showed him just how out of reach that kind of help must be for most of SA: Our national minimum wage works out to just under R5'900 a month after all.

And it spurred Mornรฉ to build an accessible solutionโฆ
The assessment trying to catch the dropout before enrolment
Prime Career is a career-guidance tool for SA Grade 11-12s, priced at around R225 instead of thousands.
A student answers one questionnaire, and the platform scores their personality against the Enneagram, layers in how they actually prefer to work using a modernised version of O*NET (the US Department of Labour's career framework), then combines the two into a report pointing them toward directions that fit.
It maps those directions onto real South African study paths at universities, TVET colleges, learnerships and trades, tagged with the NQF level it requires, even flagging which skills are in demand across South Africa right now.
Prime Career at a glance
Priced around R225 a learner
Runs on a full assessment platform Mornรฉ built and licenses to corporate clients, not a vibe-coded wrapper; pairs the Enneagram with a modernised O*NET mapped to the SA NQF
Just launched (mid-2026), first families through via the founder's own network
Founder spent 15 years building personality and skills assessments for corporates.
Roadmap: Corporate-CSI sponsorship into no-fee schools; percentile scoring once the norms group passes 1'000 to 2'000; getting schools to promote it to their own parents; a conversational follow-up product in build.
A potential alternate model
R225 is great, but Mornรฉ is aware that reaching all of SA could require more. So he is actively working on a plan to potentially access some of the R13.1 billion SA companies already spend on CSI (44% of which goes to education).
What we like: It's a R225 tool aimed squarely at a R2'500 problem (that's a 91% saving right there), built on a real engine, which is already impressive. The additional distribution plan that unlocks a share of R5.8 billion a year is intriguing, if he can find a way to access it ('cos it's notoriously hard but definitely not impossible).

3 Things in AI this week
Lost your phone? Build your own tracker. A software and robotics engineer went viral this week after using Claude to build a way to find his missing cellphone, and the code is on GitHub if you want to do it yourself.
What happens when AI output comes pre-labelled? Claude now watermarks all its generated text, useful for courts, competitions and classrooms, but what does it mean for businesses using gen-AI? And what happens when every other lab follows?
Can agentic AI actually bring families closer? Praelexis built Ria, a voice-to-voice companion that turns conversations with the older people in your family into a living biography, and helps them schedule video calls with you. See the case study.

We made the expensive mistakes so you don't have to
There's a cost to needing support for your business: You research for a week, choose badly, spend a year unwinding it, and the lesson costs more than the tool ever did.
Weโve spent 20+ years building companies in SA. Which means we've made all the expensive mistakes: hired the wrong person, signed the wrong lease, used the wrong payment provider, and paid for the wrong cloud twice.
But we took notes so you don't have to make the same mistakes. The Founder Stack is a list of SA suppliers and providers that can help you grow, locally priced, each one already stress-tested by someone who was building here long before you needed them.
You still make your own call. You just start from a shorter, more trusted list.
IN SHORT
Cause dropping a headline or two at the braai never hurt anyoneโฆ
๐ SA Working Hours Are Changing. Unemployment climbed to 33.6%, but the SA working hours data says the shift isn't toward gig work; the 40-to-45-hour week added 2.05 million jobs since 2010, four times what short-hour work managed.
๐ฎ YouTube Launches Games. YouTube Playables is live in SA, two years behind the global rollout, and with Gas Station: Junkyard Tycoon instead of Angry Birds. The lesson isn't the games though; it's the delivery: no download, no install, instant load.
๐ต Helping You Spotify the AI. Spotify's new AI Persona badge lands mid-September, flagging AI-generated artist identities and cutting them from all algorithmic recommendations. Note the nuance everyone's missing: it's about who the artist is, not whether AI made the music.
๐ Calls in the Browser. WhatsApp Web calling is live in SA, one-on-one and groups up to 32, nothing to install. Meanwhile, ICASA reports SMS revenue collapsed 37.9% to R2.6bn in a year. Expect that market enquiry to gain momentum.
๐ง UX That Pays Back. Bad UX kills conversion, retention and revenue. Isoflow is a 32-person, founder-led design studio that has spent 16 years building intuitive, high-performing digital products for fintech, ecommerce, insurance and healthtech teams.*

WORK SMARTER
Are you wasting your money?
Most SA founders spread a thin budget across every platform, get junk leads back and decide paid media just doesn't work for them. So we asked an SA paid media operator who used to train Google how to build an ad account that performs.
These are the exact 5 steps for running paid ads that actually work.

"Don't for one minute believe that a change of factory or equipment changes the profile / taste of any food or beverage product. Greed changes the profile of a product and the worst thing any business can do it to allow an accountant to dictate policy."
Weโd be shocked if we didnโt know you were probably quite right, Des. ๐ซ๐
UP OR DOWN?
A graph that matters
SA has 58 operational data centres, and 38 of them sit in one province.
๐ก Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni hold 38, Cape Town has 10 and Durban 6.
๐ก Cape Town's tribunal just approved two Equinix builds near the airport, 120'000mยฒ combined (about 14 rugby fields), drawing 174MW, enough for roughly 130'000 homes, and potentially 4.4 billion litres of water a year for cooling.
๐ก Not all dots are equal: hyperscale campuses can rival a small city's power draw, while retail, edge, telecoms and connect sites are comparatively tiny.
For founders: The compute is concentrating in Gauteng, and the water-and-power fight is only starting in the Western Cape. Neither trend is priced into most SA infrastructure planning yet.
