Dropping SME Compliance Costs by 88.8%
SA spent 32 months on FATF’s grey list (exited in October 2025), but now regulators have real teeth and they’re passing fines, even onto the little guy who can’t afford steep R25 per screen costs – so this local venture’s dropping it to just R2.80…
Regulators aren’t kidding with fines: the FSCA imposed over R943 million in penalties in one year, Standard Bank was fined R13 million for FICA non-compliance, and over 55,000 institutions are now registered with the FIC, with 556 inspections conducted in the last financial year alone.
SA's total AML compliance spend was already north of R24.3 billion back in 2018, likely higher today. But at a pricey R25 per record per sanction list screening, many small brokers in SA just couldn’t afford it because the software cost more than the penalty, so they just priced it in.
As local founder Roché Pretorius points out, though, post-grey-list, that's no longer a gamble worth taking. So he built something even better.

When the compliance officer asks if you've been doing your sanctions screening…
The local platform making compliance affordable
RAHN Monitor is an anti-money laundering and sanctions screening platform that pulls from over 500 lists, including politically exposed persons databases and law enforcement watchlists from Interpol to the FBI, the Panama Papers, as well as UN and EU sanctions registers.
The platform normalises more than three million records daily and matches them using a probability model combining three algorithms with AI, delivering more accurate results with fewer false flags for smaller teams to manually sift through.
Search individually, upload via CSV or integrate via API. Screening costs as little as R2.80 per hit (an 88.8% cost reduction).
Roché got the idea after watching a compliance system he'd developed for a client get replaced by a European platform costing R20 million a year. Together with COO Sybil Doms Pretorius and a talented team of junior developers, they built the local alternative: fully bootstrapped, already supporting 20 clients and 80 users, with KYC onboarding, bank account verification and transaction monitoring next on the roadmap.
We're watching this space…

IN SHORT
What’s shaking in tech and business…
🇿🇦 SA Takes DC. Cape Town AI surveillance startup Safeza just won the SelectUSA defence category, beating 230+ global entrants at the US Investment Summit in Washington. This is the kind of thing that makes you proud to be in SA tech.
⚖️ Too Late, Elon. Musk lost his case against Sam Altman and OpenAI. The verdict was simple: he'd let too much time pass to take them to court. The statute of limitations doesn't care about your feelings, it turns out.
⚡ Going Nuclear. Eskom wants to go to market for 5.2GW of new nuclear power within a year, but can't fund itself, so it's looking for ideas. The question everyone's asking: Why only start now?
🏦 Sharing the Pie. Motsepe-backed GoTyme is rolling out an employee ownership plan — a model that worked brilliantly for Capitec's retention and should keep top talent from walking.

UP OR DOWN?
A graph that matters
SA's commercial crime convictions dropped 84%, while reported cases are surging.

Via The Outlier
💡 Convictions dropped from a peak of 1'515 in 2007/08 to just 235 in 2024/25, an 84% collapse, even as specialised courts more than doubled from 10 to 22.
💡 In 2023/24, over 128'000 commercial crime cases were reported to police, but only 15'000 arrests were made (an arrest rate of just 11.7%).
💡 Per-court output cratered from ~200 convictions per court in 2005/06 to just 15 per court by 2023; more courts, fewer results.
More infrastructure, more prosecutors, fewer convictions; the bottleneck isn't capacity, it's investigation. And for founders in fintech and compliance, it means the regulatory environment can only get stricter.
