The stroke rehab team in every family's pocket
Every hour, 10 South Africans suffer a stroke, and two-thirds of the survivors live with lasting damage that families struggle to cope with – so this local founder's giving a helping hand…
Hey, did you know 29 October is World Stroke Day?
Let's spare a thought for the families of stroke survivors, because, when in hospital, there are a team of pros to help with recovery: from physiotherapists to speech and language therapists to psychologists to help patients regain normal speech and functioning.
But did you ever think that when the patient gets discharged, all that expertise vanishes? At 10 an hour, that's close to ('cos not everyone survives) ~240 new families per day or ~7'200 per month that desperately need help and advice on home care.
Which is why a local pro's building the tool…
The app putting a stroke rehab team on the kitchen table
StrokePath turns what a stroke rehab team knows into small daily steps a family can follow at home. Founder Denisha Vassan (herself an occupational therapist) built a 110-topic educational content hub, reviewed by actual physios, OTs, speech therapists and psychologists, and a free stroke-risk checker.
Starting is simple: You answer a few questions, and the system will suggest which 4 of the 12 core care areas you should focus on first, breaking it down into a daily plan anyone can follow.
It's made to work on any age device: She worked with her developer brother, Trishan Vassan, to build a platform that works on every phone in the house: a web app you install from the browser, and once loaded, it also runs offline.
It uses the device's own voice capability instead of streaming one (that would chew through data) for voice-led guidance, along with simple sketches instead of video. And design choices like the button sizes are built for whoever’s holding the phone, usually a spouse or adult child, while the guidance rewords itself depending on whether you’re the carer or the survivor.
StrokePath at a glance:
A stroke recovery companion for survivors and the families caring for them.
First partner: Stroke Survivors Foundation.
Roadmap: Family plan, sponsored memberships, more partner codes, Department of Health affiliation, illustrated exercise guides, more full-length articles, bug reporter.
We like that it allows virtually anyone to borrow from the rehab knowledge that's normally locked inside the hospital ward, and we can't wait to see where Denisha takes it next.
We're watching this space…

3 Things in AI this week
OpenAI says its AI just broke a 27-year-old rule of computer science. Its internal model claims to have disproved the Exponential Time Hypothesis, an assumption used in hundreds of research papers, with the proof checked in Lean. See the claim.
Anthropic just bought a one-person drug startup run with Claude. Founder Cody Tranbarger used Claude to manage Mithril Medicine’s contracts, logistics and experiments across 11 labs, taking a rare muscular dystrophy treatment from idea to promising results in mice in under 18 months. Read the story.
Praelexis is taking AI into real-world healthcare. Stellenbosch's CERI profiled its work predicting IVF success, matching medicine to genes with Intelligene, and Ria, a voice companion for older people. The lesson: build the tech around the people who'll use it. Read the profile.

Keeping stock moving starts long before it reaches the shelf
Getting the right stock to the right place at the right time starts at origin.
TFS connects businesses to 20+ origin countries across five continents, with weekly import lanes designed to keep stock flowing. From customs and documentation to lane selection and timing, one experienced team coordinates the detail required to move goods across borders and land them on schedule.
That capability can continue beyond the port into TFS warehousing, fulfilment and last-mile delivery, giving businesses access to logistics expertise across more of the journey.
With peak season weeks away, having the right stock positioned at the right time creates the foundation for a strong trading period.
From origin to customer. Built to move.

Ask Hilde about the Collab on LinkedIn
She calls herself more of a finder than a founder, and a designer who's "pushy about good UX."
She spent the last year building BrainDiver, an app that tracks her moods. Current user count: one.
The wildcard: she and two lawyers she'd just met vibecoded an AI agent system overnight at a London hackathon.

UP OR DOWN?
A graph that matters
Most street robberies and thefts in SA never get reported to the police.
💡 Car theft is reported most often, 69.4% of the time, most likely because owners need a case number to claim insurance.
💡 Sexual offences (67%) and assault (56.8%) are reported more often than property crimes. 62.7% of personal property theft and 58.3% of street robberies go unreported.
💡 The top reason for not reporting is believing the police can't or won't do anything. Second is self-reliance: people replace or fix things themselves.
Official crime stats only count what gets reported. For anyone building in security or insurance, the real problem is a lot bigger than the numbers show.
