Capitec has rolled out free voice calls between Capitec Connect SIM users, with no caps, no add-on bundles and no daily limits. The offer is automatic for every Capitec Connect customer, dropping the per-minute charge to zero for any call placed to another Capitec Connect number.
Interesting insights on Capitec free calls
Capitec Connect launched as an MVNO in 2022 on Cell C's network and now sits among the fastest-growing mobile brands in SA, with over 2 million SIMs in the market. The free calls offer leans on Capitec's existing 24m+ banking base, where roughly 1 in 3 South Africans already holds an account.
Voice revenue across SA telcos has been declining for years as WhatsApp and other OTT services eat into it, so removing the line item entirely is a cheap way for Capitec to grow share without sacrificing real margin. The MVNO model also gives Capitec network access without the capex of building towers, meaning the cost of "free" sits mostly on Cell C's wholesale rates.
Everyone's about to switch
It's a bold move in the MVNO space, but a logical one. If you're already banking with Capitec and your mom, your tjommies and your side-hustle clients are too, the math is now embarrassingly simple. Port your number, drop your call bill to zero and keep your data on whatever plan suits you.
MTN and Vodacom can't easily match this without cannibalising their bigger postpaid books, and Cell C just got handed a wholesale customer growth story. Expect a wave of switching, and expect the next Capitec banking sign-up funnel to start with "want free calls too?".
