A Nature study published on 29 July finds that climate change is not making malaria uniformly worse across Africa. It is moving it. Warming has slightly suppressed the disease in today's hottest hotspots while raising risk in cooler southern and East Africa.
Co-author Christopher Trisos of UCT's African Climate and Development Initiative says Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal are already recording more childhood cases, and by 2050 are projected to see some of the largest increases in malaria risk anywhere on the continent.
Interesting insights on climate change malaria
The mechanism is a temperature curve. Prevalence in children peaks when average monthly temperatures reach 24.9C and falls away on either side, so places already past that point get relief while cooler places climb toward it.
Drought reduces prevalence one to two months later; floods raise it two to three months later. The net historical effect across the continent is roughly one excess case per 1,000 children, with a confidence interval running from minus four to six, so the aggregate signal is genuinely small. By 2100, increases could reach 20% in the Rift Valley and coastal southern Africa.
Set against that, elimination programmes have outweighed the climate effect by close to 200-fold, with prevalence falling about 16 percentage points between 2000 and 2015.

IT-Online reported the study and the South African provincial projections. Yale News quotes corresponding author Colin Carlson saying meeting the Paris target could prevent around five cases per 1,000 children in each affected region, while Carbon Brief notes Carlson's caution that a world too hot for malaria is not a good world for children's health.
Relief in the hot places is not good news
The finding most likely to be misread is the West African decline, because a region becoming too hot for the parasite is not becoming a better place to live. The heat that suppresses malaria brings its own mortality.
The more useful framing for South African operators is capability rather than climate argument: the provinces picking up new risk are precisely the ones with the least institutional muscle for malaria control, and control is a competence that lives in clinics, surveillance systems and supply chains, not in strategy documents. If you run farms, lodges, mines or a workforce in the Lowveld, treat this as a ten-year planning input rather than a headline.
The study's own conclusion is the optimistic one, though. Elimination effort has beaten the climate signal by two orders of magnitude, which means the outcome still turns mostly on what gets funded.
