The reason things don’t sell, and the six-step journey that takes someone from never having heard of you to coming back on their own.
When people aren’t buying something that works, the answer is almost certainly not the product but all the things on the periphery.
We asked Jack Studios founder Sabeeha Banubhai, who's helped 150+ tech founders launch, how to diagnose the issues around products that don’t sell as they should.
How to get people to buy your product
1. Get your first users when nobody knows you exist
Nothing else matters if no one knows you’re there. The first job is awareness, and early on that means doing things that don’t scale: finding the next two users by hand, then the next five, often by getting the right people in a room and building with them.
2. Make sure people understand what you do
Once people arrive, they have to instantly grasp what you do, and founders are the worst judges of their own clarity. Test it: show five strangers your homepage and see if they can tell you what it does and who it’s for. Where they can’t, your message is the leak.
3. Sell the transformation, not the features
Understanding what you do isn’t the same as wanting it. Desire comes from the change your product makes to someone’s life (the transformation), not the list of features. Lead with the better version of their situation, and the right people see themselves in it.
4. Fix the small things that make buyers doubt you
Wanting it isn’t enough if they don’t trust you. Buyers decide in seconds, and small signals (a broken link, a dead social account, hidden pricing) quietly whisper “scam” and lose the sale. Walk your own funnel as a suspicious stranger and patch the cracks.
5. Speed up your product’s time-to-value
Once someone commits, get them to the payoff fast: every step between signing up and the first real value is a chance to give up. Map that path and cut everything that isn’t essential to reaching the moment your product proves itself.
6. Get users to come back without nagging them
A one-time user isn’t a business. Lasting adoption comes from a genuine reason to return that lives inside the product (recurring value tied to something the user already cares about), not from notification spam that trains people to mute you.
The big payoff
Work the whole journey and the product that wasn’t selling starts to because you’ve stopped blaming the thing you built and started clearing the hurdles between it and the customer.
