Airtel Africa switched on Starlink Mobile in the Democratic Republic of Congo on 14 August, the first commercial direct-to-phone satellite service anywhere in Africa.
Customers with a compatible LTE Android handset connect straight to Starlink's low-earth-orbit satellites, which work as towers in space. No dish, no antenna, no special handset, just a clear view of the sky.
At launch, it carries SMS and light data applications including WhatsApp messaging. There is no voice support yet.
Interesting insights on Starlink Mobile DRC
The DRC went first because its coverage gap is extreme. The country's Universal Service Development Fund published an assessment on 7 August, putting national 2G coverage at 77%, 3G at 68% and 4G at 57%, with Kinshasa near 98% while Tshuapa sits at 14%. Roughly 4.3 million people across nearly 3,000 localities have no coverage at all.
Starlink has about 650 satellites doing direct-to-cell work. The Airtel partnership dates to December 2025, covers all 14 of the group's African markets and 173.8 million customers, and was piloted in Kenya in March. Expansion depends on country-by-country approvals.
South Africa is not an Airtel market, and Starlink holds no local licence because SpaceX has not applied to Icasa, objecting to the requirement that licensees be 30% owned by historically disadvantaged groups.

Two years of arguing, one Friday to comment
The DRC did not out-innovate South Africa. It out-decided us. Airtel had a partner, a regulator willing to licence the thing, and a coverage problem too expensive to fix with towers, so it shipped.
We have the same problem in the Karoo, across the Eastern Cape and anywhere a logistics fleet loses signal, plus an equity ownership argument that has kept SpaceX from even filing. The April version of the ECA Bill carries no ownership provision, and submissions close this Friday. Whatever your position on that requirement, Friday is the moment it counts.
Note too that SpaceX has spent $19.6bn on terrestrial spectrum elsewhere. It plans to be an operator, not a stopgap.
