Taxi police {{ FIRSTNAME | there }}? When two teenagers thought they could break the law by drinking in the back of a Waymo robotaxi they'd ordered, the taxi calmly dropped them off at the nearest police station. At least it didn't phone their moms. 👮
Send this to a friend who’d be at home in the back of a robotaxi.

Next-Level Brand Insights, Now in Real-Time
Knowing if your brand marketing works used to mean an agency, a few million rand and a three-month wait. This startup turns that into a live dashboard…
When it comes to marketing, there's still one thing your competitors can't use AI to do (yet). They can't just copy-paste the space you occupy in someone's mind.
Perhaps that's why branding is now the number one priority for 2026 amongst marketing leaders. The only snag? How do you know if your branding efforts are actually paying off?
For decades, there was only one way to answer that: Hire an agency, hand over a few million rondt, wait months, get back a PowerPoint that's already stale on arrival (cause it's a quarter or two out of date).

The startup turning brand tracking into a live feed
Timelaps is an AI-native brand tracker that tells consumer brands, continuously, whether their marketing is landing.
Instead of a quarterly report, it's an always-on dashboard refreshing monthly off 4'000+ census-matched consumers in your category. Onboarding takes an hour, at a fraction of the agency cost.
Co-founders Henk Pretorius and Harry Zhang met at a San Francisco founder fellowship, arriving with two exits and two decades of market research between them. They were slinging Timelaps before building it, signing three paying clients off nothing but an interface, then building the whole platform in the gap before delivery. Nice.
They even landed a Product Hunt Launch of the Day back in March, rare for a South African startup.
Diving deeper
But Timelaps is seeing things brands themselves aren't even seeing.
When we caught up with Henk and Harry, they walked us through their study for a local coffee brand that'll remain nameless. Despite having a serious footprint across SA, they only enjoy 17% awareness, giving them immediate action points to focus on.
Another interesting coffee insight they surfaced: The biggest reason anyone walks into a coffee shop is quiet time alone. 73% of the time, coffee is not about being social, but me-time. That's pure gold insight, and no coffee brand is capitalising on it yet, you're welcome!
We're watching this space…
How do you know if your brand marketing is actually even working?

3 Things in AI this week
Fable 5 access ends Sunday; this is your last weekend to use it. Anthropic extended the deadline to 12 July, so lock in and build something big before it's gone. Here are some project ideas to make the most of it.
Can AI star in a feature film? Controversial AI-generated actress Tilly Norwood (not a real person) is officially starring in a movie, playing an AI being with no lived experience but access to other humans' backstories. The premise fits, at least.
Can computer vision catch retail fraud that your cameras miss? Praelexis built an AI pipeline for an SA retailer that analyses CCTV footage to automate delivery verification, catching discrepancies that manual auditing couldn't, with zero errors. See what actually happened.

So close, and yet so far…
What about all the leads you're not capturing?
A customer walks into the store, scans a poster, and gets asked to download an app, visit a URL or fill out a form on a browser that takes 30 seconds to load. Half don't finish. Most never come back.
It's the same online: Competition entries that require five fields and a CAPTCHA, sign-up pages that open in a separate browser tab on mobile, loyalty opt-ins buried three screens deep.
The friction between a customer showing interest and your business actually getting their details is a leak in the funnel. For most SA businesses, those leaks are invisible because you never see the leads you didn't capture.
There's a better way.
And the brands that have found it are pulling ahead fast.
IN SHORT
Cause dropping a headline or two at the braai never hurt anyone…
📱 LinkedIn and TikTok Surge. SA's social landscape is shifting, LinkedIn and TikTok are surging while Facebook's grip weakens, with local firms now prioritising engagement over follower counts and leaning into AI-driven content creation.
🔞 Ban's Not Working. Australia's world-first teen social media ban is already failing. Researchers opened 50 test accounts, declaring the age as 16 and weren't asked for age proof once. The law's there. The enforcement isn't.
💰 Cash Costs R90bn. Using cash costs South Africans R90 billion a year, according to SARB, split almost equally between direct costs (R43.5bn) and indirect costs like travel time, queuing and exposure to crime (R46.1bn).
🚌 CPT's First Electric Bus. MyCiTi's first electric bus has arrived in Cape Town, a 12m Volvo designed and built locally, with 37 more to follow. It'll be tested on Hospital Bend, the N2 and Camps Bay routes. About time.
💸 Faster VC Deals. Why does preparing funding deals take so much longer in SA? The US and UK are speeding it up with templates. So Dommisse Attorneys and SAVCA created SA's first open-source model investment documents, see more here.*
☁️ Cloud, Simplified. "Miles ahead in simplicity and reliability." That's how one partner describes Cloud on Demand after watching month-end billing shrink from a chore to a click. If you resell, manage or build on the cloud, their partner programme takes the admin off your plate.*

UP OR DOWN?
A graph that matters
52% of SA banks and 50% of payment providers are already running AI daily; everyone else is barely at the starting line.
💡 52% of banks and 50% of payment providers are actively using AI daily.
💡 The rest of finance has barely started: pensions sit at 14%, investments at 11%, and insurance and lending both at just 8%.
💡 For early adopters, the goal isn't faceless automation, it's using AI for reconciliation, fraud detection and liquidity to free up human advisors for complex client work and trust-building.
For FinTech founders: Banks and payment providers have moved. Insurance, lending and investments haven't. The adoption gap is your opportunity.
