Cape Town edtech incubator Injini has opened applications for an eight-month AI for Education Venture Builder and Incubation Programme, backed by philanthropic funder Coefficient Giving. It will take 12 pre-formed teams from nine Southern African countries through a five-month build phase, after which five progress to three months of incubation and receive $25,000 each in equity-free seed capital.

Interesting insights on Injini AI for Education
The entry requirements are unusually specific and worth reading before applying. Teams must apply as a complete unit, with at least two people and ideally three or more co-founders covering a builder, a domain or context lead, and a commercial or operations role.
Each member needs two to three years of relevant work or lived experience, and teams must be at the ideation stage, meaning a clearly evidenced concept but nothing built or launched commercially. Applicants must be based in South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia or Zimbabwe.
Delivery is mostly virtual, but there are mandatory in-person engagements in Johannesburg, including a one-week kick-off bootcamp in early November, with travel and accommodation covered for up to three team members. Five themes are in scope: foundational learning, teacher capacity and classroom support, learner pathways and futures, inclusion and access, and ecosystem and engagement.
Successful applicants are announced around 20 October, the build phase runs to March 2027 and incubation from April to June 2027.

Disrupt Africa reported the launch and notes Injini was founded in 2017, is part of the UVU Africa Group, and is a registered non-profit. ITWeb Africa has the phase structure and the country eligibility list. Injini's own programme page sets out the team composition rules, the experience requirement and what the top five ventures are expected to exit with, including early evidence of solution effectiveness.
Why the team rule is the interesting bit
Most programmes take a founder and help them find a team. This one refuses to start without one, and specifically wants somebody who has worked inside a classroom sitting alongside whoever writes the code.
Executive director Krista Davidson's reasoning is the part worth quoting: Africa is significantly underrepresented in the data training AI tools, so if local solutions do not get built now, the risk is edtech that simply does not work in African classrooms. That is a sharper argument than the usual localisation pitch, and it applies well beyond education.
Note what the programme is not. Twenty-five thousand dollars is roughly R405,000, which is proof-of-concept money rather than a seed round, and only five of the 12 teams get it. The value is the classroom access and the user testing, which is the expensive part to arrange privately.
Worth setting against the IRIS robot tutor aimed at 23,000 schools, where the hardware arrived before anyone published what it costs.
